William R. Sigmund PJAS Award

Dr. Sigmund is retiring after more than 40 years as a biology faculty member at SRU!
The “William R. Sigmund PJAS Award” was created by Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (PJAS) Region IX in 2007 to thank Dr. Sigmund for his many years of service to PJAS. Since then, it has been awarded to 14 outstanding SRU Biology students, in part, because of Dr. Sigmund’s contributions, and we want the scholarship to grow even more!
Dr. Sigmund has been the University Coordinator on the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Region IX Meeting for the past 22 years, since he helped bring it to SRU, growing it into one of the preeminent campus events each spring.
Dr. Sigmund delayed retiring until now because he simply “loves” teaching - it is his passion! For the last decade he has taught primarily “Anatomy and Physiology,” with the goal of preparing his students for graduate school or medically related careers including the SRU PA, PT, and OT programs. He is especially pleased when former students in professional schools write back to say they are better prepared in A&P than their classmates! He has been selected as the Outstanding Biology Professor eight times, most recently in 2016. He has also been the Chair of the Biology Scholarship Committee since 2003 and has been able to award these scholarships to students at the annual Natural Sciences and Math banquet each spring. He has been the advisor for Tri-Beta and the Biology Honorary, for nearly his entire time at SRU, beginning as a co-advisor in 1981.
Please join us in increasing the award amount of the William R. Sigmund PJAS Award to both thank Dr. Sigmund and help an outstanding student each year!
