Aleta Heard ’15

Picture
Aleta Heard is a nationally recognized technologist, TED speaker, maternal-health innovator, and award-winning community leader whose work sits at the intersection of technology, equity, and womanhood. She delivered the transformative TED Talk “Reshaping the Trajectory on Maternal Health,” amplifying her mission to reimagine care for mothers and families—especially Black women, who face the highest maternal-mortality risks in the nation.

Her exceptional leadership and technical acumen have earned her numerous accolades, including Slippery Rock University’s 10 Under 10 honor, Pittsburgh’s Young Professional ATHENA Award, the PA Banker Tomorrow’s Promise Award, Pittsburgh Business Times 30 Under 30, and the Pittsburgh Courier’s Women of Excellence.

Aleta’s academic excellence reflects her lifelong commitment to mastery. She earned a Business Management certificate and Associate of Science from the Community College of Allegheny County, a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration and Management with an Information Systems minor—graduating Summa Cum Laude from Slippery Rock University—and a Master’s degree in Information Systems from Duquesne University.

Her technical career began in 2016 and evolved rapidly. Starting in HR for technical recruiting, she transitioned into hands-on technology—configuring networks, supporting global systems, and modernizing digital workflows. She advanced through roles as Field Technician, Software Developer, and Senior Systems Analyst, and later became a certified Agile Product Owner with deep expertise in APIs, microservices, and iterative product design.

Aleta advanced into the financial technology sector in a national fintech firm before being recruited by the #1 Custodian in the world, a global investment bank, where she now serves as a Vice President and Agile Product Owner for Custody applications. As the Product Owner for Nexen Instruction Capture—a digital platform for trade instruction processing—she merges finance with cutting-edge technology to transform how assets are managed, traded, and serviced across the world. Her impactful leadership has also earned her the regional co-chair position for BNY Mellon’s IMPACT Employee Business Resource Group.

Beyond her career in tech, Aleta is a powerhouse in maternal-health innovation. She is the Founder of Masters of Maternity (MOM)—a groundbreaking maternal-care ecosystem designed to modernize how mothers experience pregnancy, postpartum, and community support. Through MOM Academy, MOM Cloud, and MOM Health, she is changing how families access care and how maternal specialists manage their clients from beginning to end. Her mission: to help transform maternal and infant outcomes, especially for Black families who face disproportionate risks during childbirth. Her most recent achievement includes authoring a first-of-its-kind community-college doula curriculum and launching the nation’s first community-college-based doula training program. Her curriculum has already trained more than 130 doulas expanding workforce diversity, strengthening cultural congruence, improving perinatal outcomes, and building pathways for sustainable doula careers across Pennsylvania. Her goal is to help reduce preventable maternal and infant mortality and to elevate the standard of care for every family, one journey at a time.

Aleta is also the architect and driving force behind the Doula Protection & Hospital Accountability Act, a forward-thinking policy proposal designed to safeguard doula autonomy, prevent harmful over-regulation, and establish supportive standards that encourage hospitals to fully embrace doula-integrated, family-centered care. Her policy leadership champions equitable outcomes and protects community-based doula models that have historically supported Black and Brown families.

As a founding member and current Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Doula Commission, the first of its kind in the state, Aleta advances statewide strategy and advocacy efforts focused on protecting, promoting, and legitimizing the doula profession.

In addition to her leadership in maternal health and technology, Aleta serves on two boards: the Slippery Rock University Foundation Board and the Girls Inc. Board of Directors, where she helps shape opportunities, resources, and pathways for women and girls across generations.

Her journey is deeply rooted in her love for women’s empowerment, community transformation, and technological innovation. Although she spent nearly two decades as a trained ballerina—disciplining her body, sharpening her resilience, and cultivating the grit she is known for—her purpose expanded when she became a mother in 2018. Today, she is a devoted wife and mother who enjoys traveling, building community, and inspiring others through her faith, leadership, and lived experiences.

She leads with conviction, compassion, and faith-based purpose, measuring success not by titles or accolades, but by the lives impacted, barriers broken, and the systems transformed for mothers, families, and the generations to come.
Aleta serves on the Investment Committee.
