The 1889 Society at Slippery Rock University

Members of the The 1889 Society have expressed their commitment to Slippery Rock University by naming the university as a beneficiary of a planned gift.

Why The 1889 Society?

  • The 1889 Society was named in honor of the founding date of Slippery Rock University. SRU opened its doors March 26, 1889, as Slippery Rock State Normal School. Its first president was James Morrow, grandfather of Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and the enrollment for the first session was 168 students.
  • The 1889 Society acknowledges donors having designated the university as a beneficiary of a planned gift of any size. Membership in the society does not have a minimum gift level. The university is grateful to all of our donors for their generosity and support of the university and its students.

I want to become a member of The 1889 Society.

Have you updated your will recently? You can make a bequest to the university in your will or other estate planning. We recommend speaking with your financial advisor or attorney or using a reliable online tool to make or update your will.

I have already named the university in my will or other estate planning. What next?

Once you have completed your estate plans, please reach out to our staff to document your gift to the university. It only takes a quick call or email to document your gift. You can email us at [email protected] or call the office at 724-738-2004 and our team will be happy to help.

Your dreams. Your legacy. Make your will, today.
