John Garber Memorial Outstanding Senior Safety Management Major Award Donation
John E Garber Jr. a native of Wilkes Barre, PA was born in 1968 and attended Slippery Rock University of PA from 1986 - 1990. He earned his undergraduate degree in the Administration of Occupational Health and Safety Management degree program under Dr. George Mihalek and Dr. Joseph Cali. As part of the active student body in SRU John was heavily dedicated and involved in many campus and student organizations. John served an active participatory role in the student section of the SRU American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) / formally (ASSE). He was a founding member and consultant for the on-campus organizations of Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD) and Fraternities Against Drunk Drivers ( FADD). John was a proud member of the Greek community on campus and was a brother of the Sigma Pi fraternity.
Following his formative years of professionalism, education and community involvement John pursued a career in Loss Control / Safety and Risk Management in the commercial insurance and Human Capital (HR) fields back near his Eastern PA / Philadelphia hometown. John continued his pursuit of higher education by earning his Masters and PhD from St Joseph's University, all the while maintaining his professional career pursuits in the commercial insurance and risk management sector. John also gave to the community by serving as part-time professor of Human Capital / Human Resources Management at Villanova University.
John was a strong faith based, giving, caring and family man. He was married to his loving wife Traci for 29 years they are the proud parents of a college-aged daughter Dana, graduating in December 2021. John was a talented scratch handicap golfer and loved family vacations to the beaches and Disney. Ultimately, John succumbed to cancer at 53 after a tough and honorable fight. He faced his untimely death with his usual mix of faith, love of family, and compassion for others.
A group of John’s friends and fraternity brothers have established a memorial scholarship in John's memory so that promising Safety Management students like John can be rewarded.
